Tuesday, December 2, 2008 Steven W. Nicolet A Subtle Shift in Power
Now we have perennial power, Gary Bonn staking claim to the number #1 position in both overall record and picking percentage. Gary passed Linda for the best record last week and this week he catches Linda in the picking percentage. PLUS he catches Nicolet in total number of correct picks for the season. Gary does all of this AND grabs a share of the Picker of the Week Award...again! What a great week to be Gary. Gary, Mike Colliau and Matt Cushman each posted an outstanding 12-2 record this week. All three pickers are awarded "Picker of the Week". Congratulations men. That's some fine pickin' fellas.
Now let's take a look at these league statistics. The first chart is the head-to-head records. You may notice that in case of a tie, a picker is awarded a "half" of a win. In other words, one victory out of 12 games played equals = .083, then we have to divide that number by 2 and we end up with .417...which is then added to the win/loss percentage of the rest of your games.
Gary and Brian Klingenberg are tied for the best record at 10-2. Linda was able to end that 3 game losing streak and she is tied with Mike Colliau, Kevin Sandoval and Steven Nicolet with a 9-3 record. Basically, the top 12 teams get into the play-offs. We've never had a .500 picker make it so those who are sitting there with a 6-6 record know what you have to do. Here is the category of Best Picking Percentage. This is a title for bragging rights at the end of the season. And in some rare cases, may even be the deciding tie-breaking factor that determines who qualifies for the play-offs.
Once again we have Gary on top, but of course he is tied for first with Nicolet. Both Gary and Steven lead Linda and Joel Dalman by 2 thousandth of a percentage point. You may also notice that not everyone has picked 192 games this year. There have been some weeks where pickers miss picking because it was their "Bye" week. We did not give anyone losses for not picking during the Bye week. NOTE: Some Bye weeks scheduled 13 games and other's had 14 games. DIVISION SUMMARIES NPC WEST Dennis Harmor puts the pedal to the medal and keeps pace with Thomas Van Dyke. Both pickers share 1st place with a 7-5 record. This was the worse time for Rene Garza to forget to submit his picks. He drops back a game with a record of 6-6. NPC EAST Our thoughts & prayers go out to Don Zysk whose mother has become very ill. Picking has taken a back seat for him right now. In the mean time, Jeff Nichols holds on to a slim one game lead over Peter Tadros. Tadros and Landry have been taking turns in the 2nd place spot for the entire season. I guess it's Peter's turn this week. NPC NORTH In one of the highlighted games of the week and arguably the most exciting match-up of the season, Kevin Sandoval took on Todd Prins to decide who would be in the driver's seat in this tough division. In dramatic fashion, this game went into overtime. Sandoval went high with 50 points...while Todd played conservative with 39 points. In the old format of yester-year, Todd would have won because the final score was 47 points. But thanks to the Gary Bonn sponsored amendment to the PYX constitution, it is no longer the closest without going over, but simply the closest to the score. Sandoval can send Gary an early Christmas present for this one. Now Kevin takes a 2-game lead with only 4 weeks to go. NPC SOUTH Linda Dalman ends that 3 game skid but Mike Colliau grabs the Picker of the Week award. Both pickers are in a dead-lock with 9-3 records. These two pickers split in head-to-head meetings with Linda winning in week 5 and Mike getting revenge in week 12. There are four weeks left, but after close examination, it looks like Mike will have a more difficult schedule down the stretch. Either way, it will be no surprise to see both of these pickers in the Play-Offs. APC WEST We are going to have to create a new award this year. I think it should be called "The Damn Luckiest Picker" award. And it should go to none other than Brian Klingenberg. Brian just happens to be in the right place at the right time every week. Whether he's picking against Hazlewood or Zink or Al Bonn, somehow his opponents forget to submit picks in that week! Get this...Klingenberg has been in six (6) games that have gone into overtime this year...and what do you think his record is in these games? He's 6-0 in overtime!!! He got another four (4) wins just because his opponents forgot to make picks. That's a total of 10 wins...and what is his record? Brian is 10-2...the best record in the league. What are the odds of this happening? In all fairness to Brian, he has shown up, put on his picking helmet and entered the picking field each and every week. He has a 4 game lead over Nate Lucas with 4 weeks to go. Brian is the first picker to clinch a play-off spot. Keep up the good work Farm Boy...you're making Hamilton proud! APC EAST In the other highlighted game of the week, we had first place picker, Kevin Rosenau taking on 2nd place Al Nowak in the long awaited re-match from week 3 when they played to a tie. It looked like they were headed to another tie in this instant classic but Al took the Houston Texans while Kevin put everything on the Jacksonville Jaguars. Maybe Al knew that the Texans lost to the Jaguars in Week 4 by a field goal in overtime...and this time it was on their own field in front of a sell-out crowd in the very first Monday Night football game in the history of the franchise. No matter what Al knew, he now finds himself in a two-way tie for first place with Rosenau. It certainly won't get any easier for Nowak...in the last 4 weeks he has to take on Gene Koon, Brian Klingenberg and the Thome family. Oh...and the 3rd place picker, Kevin Haranczak, our defending PYX Bowl Champion...can anyone hear the fat lady starting to sing? APC SOUTH I...er...I mean, Steven Nicolet just about has this one wrapped up with a three game lead and 4 weeks to go. Brent Van Wieren was putting on a nice run, but then fellow Hamiltonian Joel Dalman tripped him up. Joel just wasn't going to let Brent get the best of him again like he did in Week 7. This Dalman-Van Wieren rivalry goes all the way back to 1974 when they battled each other in kindergarten at Blue Star Elementary School. I wonder if they were fighting over the attention of that cute little O'Donnell girl way back then...Hmmmm? APC NORTH Gary Bonn, Rachelle Sova and Gene Koon all win this week. Gary grabs the Picker of the Week Award and even expansion team, Bryan Bickford grabs an award. Bryan (along with Kevin Rosenau) gets the "Loner of the Week" award by being the only picker to correctly pick Denver pulling the upset over Brett Favre. Gary still hold on to that 2 game lead over Sova. This division does appear to be the strongest with Sova and Koon looking like solid wildcard contenders. Could this division produce 3 play-off teams?
Week 14 Spotlight Match-ups: Rene Garza vs. Thomas Van Dyke - Garza defeated Thomas in overtime in Week 2. But this time Van Dyke has the home field advantage. Garza has been in a little slump lately, while Thomas has been picking like his PYX Bowl form of last season. Thomas sits one game ahead in the standings...this may be do or die for Rene. Gene Koon vs. Al Nowak - Although these two pickers are not in the same division, this game has tremendous play-off implications written all over it. Al finds himself in a two-way tie for first place in his division while Gene is fighting for a play-off spot. If Al slips up down the stretch and doesn't win his division, it may come down to Koon and Nowak to get that last and final play-off slot. There is a lot riding on this game. Can Nowak handle the pressure of the spotlight two weeks in a row?!
The standings are now updated and
posted. You can take a look at the final scores
