From the desk of the Commissioner...

M
ike Colliau of the Metro Brotherhood stands alone.  Mike is the only picker who remains undefeated in this competitive season.  But did he have a great battle this past week?  Not exactly.  It was a bye week for Colliau.  The only battle he had was deciding which beer to drink while he sat on the couch watching the games.  Congratulations Mike; that was the most productive bye week in PYX history.

As we look at the standings we see something very strange.  The picker with the best picking percentage is Brian Klingenberg (42-18 or 70%).  But the picker with the worst overall head-to-head record is also Brian Klingenberg (1-3).  How can this be?  Under the current picking format, this can happen.  Last year Joel Dalman had the 4th best picking percentage in the league (179-77 or 70%).  But Joel went 7-9 in head-to-head action and didn't qualify for the play-offs.  No, this is not a Hamilton conspiracy.  It is simply our picking system that was voted into law at the famous PYX Summit in Lansing, MI - 2003.

Of course, if you remember, two years ago, this system was once again put on the ballot (Proposal B of the 2004 election).  There were not enough votes to over-turn the current system.  But 50% of the pickers polled want the league to reward someone for having a good picking percentage.  The league is looking into this and is appointing a committee to draft a new proposal that gives credit for both head-to-head victories and overall picking percentage.  This proposal will be on the ballot on election day.

I must express my sincere appreciation to the Congressional Committee on Late Picking.  This committee worked with speed and precision.  Good job Assistant Vice Commissioner Nicolet on your excellent work.

The league is still waiting on results from two other committees:  1) The Congressional Archives Committee and the 2) League Expansion Task Force.

The Archives Committee is being chaired by the Vice Commissioner, Kevin Haranczak.  Mr. Haranczak is charged with the task of auditing the "Books".  We need to verify the number of correct picks from picker Nicolet in 2005; we need to verify the number of seasons that Justice Al Nowak has served; we need to once again take a look at season #1 in 1995 and verify if Al Bonn actually won the Picking Title; we need to find the missing Commissioner's comments following season #2 in 1996-97; we need to discover the missing "Late Comers" records in 1998; we need to give post credit to any picker who made picks, but did not receive credit for correctly picked games that hadn't started at the time the picks were submitted; we need to investigate round #1 of the PYX Bowl II Play-offs of 2001 (17 pickers playing in 16 spots); we need to verify the accusations against Vice Commissioner Haranczak regarding the illegal chat log that has been allegedly obtain by one of our pickers...who was Haranczak chatting with and did league officials know about this inappropriate chat and just try to cover it up?; an official statement from the league must be drafted to explain the PYX Bowl I Play-offs of 2000 in which Gary Bonn was conspicuously missing, even though he qualified.  Mr. Haranczak, you and your committee has its work cut out - you had better put in some extra hours working on this.  I expect this report on my desk no later than Friday, October 27 at 5:00 pm.

The League Expansion Task Force is being chaired by Justice Gary Bonn.  This is a complex issue and we hope that Mr. Bonn can come up with a proposal to present before the league by season's end.

The PYX Store is up in running and the orders are coming in. Order a T-shirt or sweatshirt and wear it proudly. Let everyone know that you are an exclusive member of the number #1 picking organization in the nation. And remember, the proceeds of every purchase you make goes directly back into the PYX Annual Fund. The PYX Annual Fund is used for keeping our website alive.

It costs $15 per year to keep the name "thepyx.net"  It costs another $30 to have our website hosted.  It will cost at least $50 to purchase the PYX traveling trophy...plus $20 for engraving.  We have postage and printing costs as well.  Our annual budget is $115 plus administrative salaries and the Commissioner's slush fund.  I just received our first quarter financial report and the numbers were a little disturbing.  We only brought in $16.70; that means we are 42% behind pace.

I am personally asking every picker in this great league of ours to show their commitment and make a purchase from the PYX Store.  The only way that the PYX can continue to grow and be better, is for you to do your part.

Please visit the PYX Store:

Thank you and good picking!

Your Commish,
